If you previously held a Florida driver’s license, moved out of state, and are now returning to Florida, the steps to obtain your Florida driver’s license again depend on whether you were REAL ID compliant before you moved.
If You Were REAL ID Compliant
If your prior Florida driver’s license was REAL ID compliant, you generally only need to bring your current out-of-state driver’s license or identification card. If nothing has changed, no additional documents are required. If something has changed, additional documentation will be needed:
- Address change: Bring two proofs of residential address showing your name and Florida physical address, dated within the last 60 days.
- Name change: Bring legal documentation supporting the name change (such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order), along with two proofs of address if your address has also changed.
Not Sure If You Were REAL ID Compliant?
If you are unsure whether your previous Florida license was REAL ID compliant, contact our office and we can check your record for you before you visit.
If You Were NOT REAL ID Compliant
If your previous Florida driver’s license was not REAL ID compliant, you will need to bring the required documents for an initial Florida driver’s license application.
- Original or certified U.S. Birth certificate or
- U.S. Passport
- Social Security Card
- 2 proofs of residential address from 2 different sources dated within the last 60 days.
If your name has changed since birth, name change documents will be required as well. If you currently have a Commercial Driver's License and are required to carry a medical card, you will need to present it at the time of issuance.
Bringing the correct documents to your appointment will help ensure a smooth and timely transaction. If you have questions about what to bring or want to confirm your REAL ID status, please contact our office before your visit.
