If you’re a Florida resident serving in the U.S. Armed Forces and are deployed or stationed outside of Florida, here’s what you need to know about maintaining your driver license:
Early Renewals
If your license is scheduled to expire while you are away, we strongly encourage you to renew before deployment or relocation.
Florida drivers may renew their license up to 18 months before the expiration date printed on the license.
Online Renewals and Replacements
You may renew your license online through the MyDMV Portal:
Renew or Replace Your License Online
You can also use the portal to:
- Order a replacement license if your license is lost or your address changes.
After completing an online renewal, you can track when your license is printed and mailed using the DL/ID Card Tracking System:
Track Your License
Please allow 7 to 10 days to receive your license in the mail.
Military Extensions
If you are not eligible to renew online, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) can issue a military extension card. This card extends your driving privilege continuously until:
- 90 days after discharge from military service,
- You return to Florida to reside, or
- You obtain a new license or ID card from Florida or another state
To apply for a military extension, you must:
- Complete the Military Personnel and Dependents Affidavit (HSMV Form 73641)
Download Form 73641 - Provide a copy of your current military orders showing active-duty status while stationed outside Florida.
Important: Military extensions are issued by FLHSMV, not by the Tax Collector’s Office.
Submit your completed affidavit and documents using one of the following methods:
- Email: MilitaryID@flhsmv.gov
- Fax: (850) 617-5034
-
Mail:
Bureau of Credentialing Services
2900 Apalachee Pkwy, MS 92
Tallahassee, FL 32399
Please Note: Military extension cards may not be accepted in some countries when serving overseas, so renewing early is strongly recommended when possible.
